In the 2003 article referenced by Myron (found here: http://faculty.virgi...pub025-as-html.), Haidt says, "Elevation and gratitude motivate directly prosocial behavior . . ." However, in the 2006 book ("The Happiness Hypothesis"), he mentions some lab experiments and says, "We did not find that elevation made people behave much differently." So, it seems that research subsequent to the 2003 paper has changed his understanding. Frankly, I would question, on evolutionary grounds, an emotion that leads nowhere but a warm, fuzzy jolt.
