tariki Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 Just thought this news story was worth a mention. We were chatting about this while the story was covered on the TV, and what came up was the thought of how there are those in this world who construct a bomb, strap it to themselves, and detonate it within some shopping mall, killing randomly. But there in Chile we have a whole host of people co-operating and over a couple of months or more helping to rescue 33 guys. A good story. Some of the pictures from the scene could truly be called "heart warming".
glintofpewter Posted October 15, 2010 Posted October 15, 2010 There were many participants from Japanese underwear to German cable than doesn't twist to carefully introducing food to starving men. A wonderous coming together. Luis Urzua's leadership is Shackleton's equal. It seems to have been key to keeping the miners alive for the first 17 days. Did you catch the miners' reference to the 34th person that was always present?
tariki Posted October 15, 2010 Author Posted October 15, 2010 A biography of Shackleton (called, funnily enough, "Shackleton")remains one of the best books I have read. Unlike some biographies, where by page 183 we are still being told about great great grandfathers, the one called "Shackleton" had him off to the Antarctic by about page 20! The book was based upon the actual diary entries made at the time by various people, and read like a real adventure story. I do remember the "extra man/fourth presence" being mentioned near the end as they trekked over the final island. Heard nothing about the 34th man!!
