  1. I am back to work after two weeks on paternity leave. During this break I have had lots of time to think about philosophy and religion. Now I need to motivate myself to thinking about finance and banking again.

Our two year old son got his first hair but yesterday. Our little girl is doing great as we approach her one month birthday. She is still in the helpless infant stage, just eating and sleeping and crying.

  2. Journal of Cosmology - Volume 14

Is consciousness an epiphenomenal happenstance of this particular universe? Or does the very concept of a universe depend upon its presence? Does consciousness merely perceive reality, or does reality depend upon it? Did consciousness simply emerge as an effect of evolution? Or was it, in some sense, always "out there" in the world? These questions and more, will be answered in this special edition.

  3. It seems like in my lifetime the use of fundamentalist has developed a negative connotation; it is used to describe the fringe. I like your use of the term evangelical orthodoxy. I was raised in an evangelical home and went to an evangelical private school; most of my family are evangelical Christians. None of my family would identify themselves as fundamentalist.

Some of my family are pentecostal; to me the defining attribute of pentecostal is more lively contemporary church services and the speaking in tongues. I was raised holiness which is like pentecostal without the lively services or the speaking in tongues; in particular I was raised in the Nazarene Church.

It seems like the evangelical orthodoxy has converged around the idea of 'born again', rapture, stict moral codes including conservative sexual codes, pro-life, and prohibition of alcohol consumption. Open questions which separate denominations include worship style, method of sanctification, the frequency and meaning of 'back-sliding', speaking in tongues. Other open questions are acceptance of evolution and global warming, level of focus on Isreal and focus on end times.

Interesting questions to me is the overlap and differentiation compared to mainline protestants and to Roman Catholics. There are definitely conservative Roman Catholics who share many views with evangelicals. There are some documented cases of speaking in tongues appearing in the mainline protestent denominations and many of the mainline denominations have breakaway versions which have become evangelical; consider for example the different Lutheran branches. My childhood church, the Nazarenes are actually a break away from the Methodist.

Are we getting to a point where protestant is to broad a category and we need to differentiate evangelical and mainline?

  4. Dutch, that is a great idea you are acting on by copying links to the link section on the forum. I certainly am enjoying having the links set aside in one place.

I have had an amazing week. My wife had a little girl on Monday morning and we have just brought her home from the hospital today. Her name is Hope. I choose the name with my wife as a spiritual testimony. Mother and daughter are doing fine though mother is really exhausted.

I enjoyed browsing and reading here while in the hospital with my family the last two days. Our little boy Troy who is two is also doing really well with help of family and his sitter.

  5. This morning on walk to work I was listening to the "The Partially Examined Life" podcast Episode 39 which discussed Schleiermacher's defense of religion. I did not complete the Episode but I am really enjoying this Episode; I think I will save it and listen to it a few times.
