Keep in mind that if God is persuasive, then it's not God's fault that the Church has become as divided and messed up as it is, as we humans are able to resist God's leadings and do our own thing instead. God woos but we can be unrequitive lovers.

Okay, my Take 2 didn't work either...
So, Let me post it here as an attachment.
I was asked to be a guest speaker for a forum for Christian students at a local University tonight and I prepared the attachment found below as a hand out as part of my presentation. I'll be refining that document soon for other purposes and I'm soliciting the feedback and input from the members of this august and sage forum to help it be as helpful as possible. Some forms of Christianity are highly Hellenized, i.e. assimilated Aristotles notions of an "unmoved mover" (omnipotence, omniscience, etc..)

I don't think that Jesus "was trying" to get nailed to the cross, but He knew full well what the likely consequences of His radical actions would be. IMO, instead of seeking a way of harmony and least resistance, He chose a path of great resistance - with defiance even.

That said, one major difference is that the Taoist way of least resistance (wu-wei) is the opposite of Jesus' Way of the Cross; i.e. the way of self-sacrificial love.

1. I like Greg Boyd's works.
2. A possible similarity between Christianity and Taoism, IMO, is the "negative theology" of the Eastern Orthodox Church; i.e. their "apophatic" notion that God cannot really be defined by humans. Such a notion is akin to the beginning of the Tao Te Ching where it says "The tao that can be named/defined is not the tao."

My adivice is to always begin by developing relationships and friendship first.
Then use a soft approach that gets them thinking instead of defending; e.g.
say "I hear what you're saying, but someone else just told me about another perspective... (describe it), and it seems like there might be some truth or sense to that view to. What do you make of that view?"
Also, I advise appealing to their mutal love for this country and it's best interests.. then with the nation's best interests in mind, encourage them to take a genuine look at all of the possible options for addressing our problems. etc.
It goes without saying that one should always avoid engaging in attacking persons (ad hominem) or using divisive words that put distance between groups. Instead, keep the conversation focused on addressing and critiquing policy and positions - not persons.
Finally, try to come across as humble and not with an "I'm right, your wrong!" attitude. Using some self-effacing humor goes along ways as well; e.g. telling a joke poking fun of quirks of the Democrats/liberals etc.

I was a philosophy major in college and I know what you're saying. That said, I learned from Christianity that "the wisdom of the world will reject and see as foolish the Wisdom of God." ; )
But, agreed, there are varieties of Christianity, not just one homogeneous way..

I have used this version of the Bible in my daily devotional life and have also found it to be helpful when preparing sermons. Basically, it reads like a paraphrase that seeks to convey Biblical truths in contemporary speech and colloquialisms. I wouldn't say it's particularly scholarly or literal in its translations, but it does read like a breath of fresh air - on the whole.
