FredP Posted March 24, 2005 Posted March 24, 2005 I didn't know where else to categorize this topic, but this should work. I thought it would be fun to have a place to post lyrics that are particularly meaningful to us personally, have a spiritual twist to them, or are just plain fun without being horribly off-topic. FredP Posted March 24, 2005 Author Posted March 24, 2005 (edited) Here are a few of my favorites from King's X. They date from a more searching period in my life (10+ years ago), but they still say a lot... And hell, they're just downright groove-tastic. Pleiades when i look up at the stars at night what could i find beyond the light a hundred million worlds that we ignore who can restrain pleiades or know the laws of heavenly's how many times have we been wrong before far off in the field i see a castle today the people gather at the pole he tried to tell us all the world was spherical they burned his body but not his soul Lies in the Sand (The Ballad Of...) There's a man, who says there is a light in the sky. All my friends say he's telling a lie. But he speaks with such passion that I have to think about. And his hands ... well they tremble as he points it out. But I can't see what it's all about And the voices of many are singing along it seems. Is it all something new? And will I see it too? Or is this just continuing man? Throughout all history, claiming they all can see but the evidence falters just short of my hand. And there are lies in the sand. There's a man who says he was a Satanic Beast. And the many were there at his feet. And he scared all the people, cause he is just what we want. Is it all something new? And will I see it too? Or is this just continuing man? Making more history, claiming they all can see but the evidence falters just short of my hand. And there are lies in the sand. There are things that will surely seem as they are not, And I might not know all that I've got. But the bluffing is easy, and I haven't seen your hand. Run Yeah she told me, that if I wasn't good He would get me, make me pay for everything I did, and she said that everybody bad would burn in Hell I did what she told me and I became someone else I had to run I had to hide In the world outside A better chance, out there If God is everywhere I wait for nothing, take my chances let it ride maybe there's an answer but it's buried by the lies Somebody told me that it's just a waste of my time But I can't get rid of all those bags I left behind Edited March 24, 2005 by FredP Quote
AletheiaRivers Posted March 24, 2005 Posted March 24, 2005 When you’re down and troubled And you need a helping hand And nothing, whoa nothing is going right. Close your eyes and think of me And soon I will be there To brighten up even your darkest nights. You just call out my name, And you know whereever I am I’ll come running, oh yeah baby To see you again. Winter, spring, summer, or fall, All you have to do is call And I’ll be there, yeah, yeah, yeah. You’ve got a friend. If the sky above you Should turn dark and full of clouds And that old north wind should begin to blow Keep your head together and call my name out loud And soon I'll be knocking upon your door. You just call out my name and you know where ever I am I’ll come running to see you again. Winter, spring, summer or fall All you got to do is call And I’ll be there, yeah, yeah, yeah. Hey, ain’t it good to know that you’ve got a friend? People can be so cold. They’ll hurt you and desert you. Well they’ll take your soul if you let them. Oh yeah, but don’t you let them. You just call out my name and you know wherever I am I’ll come running to see you again. Oh babe, don’t you know that, Winter spring summer or fall, Hey now, all you’ve got to do is call. And I’ll be there, yes I will. You’ve got a friend. Quote

curlytop Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 "Between the Times" by Ray Makeever Once there was a river in the valley With water clear as crystal casting diamonds in the sun. Now the river bed is dry and empty And no one knows where all the water's gone. But somewhere from the east there come the mem'ries That weave the morning sunrise with the river's sacrifice And those who trust the movement of the cent'ries Can still see the river flow between the times. Chorus: Between the times of plenty-- 1) When the water's just a trickle in our lives 2) When the song is just a whisper in our lives 3) When freedom is imprisoned in our lives --At the time that we must grieve Because the words that we believe aren't coming true What shall we do between the times? What shall we do between the times? Once there was a singer in each person With a voice as strong as rain and thunder carried on the wind Now the sounds we make are so uncertain That we wonder if we'll ever sing again But somewhere from the north there come the mem'ries That whisper on the breeze across the lakes and in the pine And those who trust the movement of the cent'ries Can still hear a song to sing between the times. Once there was a road that led to freedom Where kindness walked with truth and peace and justice led the way Now the people have no one to lead them And we weep to see the children go astray But somewhere from the south there come the mem'ries Of a land of milk and honey and the promised rainbow sign And those who trust the movement of the cent'ries Can still walk along the road between the times. Peace and fortitude, curlytop Quote
AletheiaRivers Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 Barenaked Ladies "When You Dream" With life just begun, my sleeping new son has eyes that roll back in his head They flutter and dart, he slows down his heart and pictures a world past his bed It's hard to believe As I watch you breathe Your mind drifts and weaves When you dream, what do you dream about? When you dream, what do you dream about? Do you dream about music or mathematics or planets too far for the eye? Do you dream about Jesus or quantum mechanics or angels who sing lullabies? His fontanelle pulses with lives that he's lived With memories he'll learn to ignore And when it is closed, he already knows he's forgotten all he knew before But when sleep sets in history begins But the future will win When you dream, what do you dream about? When you dream, what do you dream about? Are they colour or black and white, Yiddish or English or languages not yet conceived? Are they silent or boisterous? Do you hear noises just loud enough to be perceived? Do you hear Del Shannon's "Runaway" playing on transistor radio waves? With so little experience, your mind not yet cognizant Are you wise beyond your few days? When you dream, what do you dream about? When you dream, what do you dream about? Quote

tpirob Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 These lyrics are pretty recent. This is just a portion of them: "God, for the life of me, I don't know why -- We hurt each other in... in the name of what is right-- Oh, what we think is right. God, for the life of me, I don't understand -- Echos every day of man's inhumanity to man-- Man's inhumanity to man. There's a river of sorrow...running through my heart....through the long night, I will follow......the glimmer in the dark.....Lord, You are the human spark." -Michael W. Smith Peace, -Rob Quote

FredP Posted April 13, 2005 Author Posted April 13, 2005 The Distance to the Sun Spock's Beard There is no peace Here in my mind There's no way to see We're all born blind To some place some time When we could feel like We're joined inside We can't always See it with our eyes But there is a world apart from what we know There is a time the eyes will never show We can be as one And be farther than the distance to the sun There is no use you'll never win They'll only kick you back again Back where you've been And you're never satisfied Your wants just change You've been playing an unwinnable game But there is a world apart from what we know There is a place the eyes will never show We can be as one And be farther than the distance to the sun Half the time we're gone, we don't know why Half of us are crying to the sky Once we're there we'll wonder why it took so long Once we're there we'll know what we became Quote
AletheiaRivers Posted April 13, 2005 Posted April 13, 2005 Get together - The Youngbloods Love is but a song to sing Fear's the way we die You can make the mountains ring Or make the angels cry Though the bird is on the wing And you may not know why Come on people now Smile on your brother Everybody get together Try to love one another Right now Some may come and some may go We shall surely pass When the one that left us here Returns for us at last We are but a moment's sunlight Fading in the grass Come on people now Smile on your brother Everybody get together Try to love one another Right now If you hear the song I sing You will understand (listen!) You hold the key to love and fear All in your trembling hand Just one key unlocks them both It's there at you command Come on people now Smile on your brother Everybody get together Try to love one another Right now Quote
surattius Posted April 16, 2005 Posted April 16, 2005 Wow, you guys are reminding me of when I was younger, and when I used to hear a song, and think OH YES, that's IT. And I tried to share it with someone, and back then, there was no one who felt like I did about things. Here you are! I'm only going to quote a snippet, from the same Barenaked Ladies album that Altheia quoted from above. I always like the songs I can think of as being about God. "When you call, I will answer. When you fall, I'll pick you up. And when you court Some disaster, I'll point you home I'll point you home." Quote
AletheiaRivers Posted April 16, 2005 Posted April 16, 2005 I'm really surprised more people haven't posted lyrics. I mean COME ON! How much easier can a thread get? Here's another snippet: "My Sacrifice" Hello my friend, we meet again It's been awhile, where should we begin? Feels like forever Within my heart are memories Of perfect love that you gave to me Oh, I remember When you are with me, I'm free I'm careless, I believe Above all the others we'll fly This brings tears to my eyes My sacrifice Quote
sterrettc Posted May 2, 2005 Posted May 2, 2005 One I find with spiritual significance is "In This Life" by Pat Humphries In this life I am but one Of a million starving others Robbed of everything but hunger We are prisoners together I am one, but one of many single voices in the silence That refuse the lies that bind us. We are worthy. We are safe. Quote
ArmadilloUCC Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 INDIGO GIRLS, folks, INDIGO GIRLS....!!!! From "Philosophy of Loss" Welcome to why the church has died In the heart of the exiled, in the Kingdom of Hate She owns the land and keeps her commands And marries herself to the State. Modern scribes in Jesus Christ, everyone is free And the doors open wide to all straight men and women But they are not open to me. And who is teaching the kids to be soldiers Marked by a plain white cross? You kill just a little to save a lot more The philosophy of Loss From "The Woods Song" What it takes to cross the Great Divide Takes more than all the courage I can muster up inside But we get to have some answers when we reach the other side The prize is always worth the rocky ride. The wood is tired and the wood is old We can make it fine if the weather holds But if the weather holds, we'll have missed the point. That's where we need to go. Quote

There isn't any place to go The music is a mountain made All through the years The song is played The song is played Wind raging you remain at the mast Still slaving to be free at last The movement knows No love betrayed The final tears As the song is played As the song is played All that is shall be in the world What is shall ... BrotherRog Posted June 5, 2005 Posted June 5, 2005 An oldie ('70s) but a goodie: One Tin Soldier Listen children to a story that was written long ago 'Bout a kingdom on a mountain, and the valley folk below On the mountain was a treasure buried deep beneath a stone And the valley people swore they'd have it for their very own. (Chorus:) Go ahead and hate your neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend Do it in the name of heaven, justify it in the end There won't be any trumpets blowing, come the judgment day On the bloody morning after - one tin soldier rides away. So the people of the valley sent a message up the hill Asking for the buried treasure, tons of gold for which they'd kill Came an answer from the kingdom: "With our brothers we will share All the secrets of our mountain, all the riches buried there. Chorus Now the valley cried with anger, mount your horses, draw your sword! And they killed the mountain people, so they won their just reward Now they stood beside the treasure on the mountain dark and red Turned the stone and looked beneath it - "Peace on Earth" was all it said. BrotherRog Posted June 5, 2005 Posted June 5, 2005 By The Indigo Girls: (BTW, one of them, Amy, is the daughter of a United Methodist pastor and professor, Don Sailes) The Wood song The thin horizon of a plan is almost clear, my friends and I have had a tough time bruising our brains hard up against change; all the old dogs and the magician Now I see we're in the boat in two-by-twos, only the heart that we have for a tool we could use and the very close quarters are hard to get used to; love weighs the hull down with it's weight But the wood is tired, and the wood is old, and we'll make it fine, if the weather holds. But if the weather holds, we'll have missed the point; that's where I need to go. No way construction of this tricky plan was built by other than a greater hand with a love that passes all our understanding watching closely over the journey, yeah But what it takes to cross the great divide seems more that all the courage I can muster up inside. But we get to have some answers when we reach the other side The prize is always worth the rocky ride. But the wood is tired, and the wood is old, and we'll make it fine, if the weather holds. But if the weather holds, we'll have missed the point; that's where I need to go. Sometimes I ask to sneak a closer look; skip to the final chapter of the book and then maybe steer us clear from some of the pain it took to get us where we are this far. But the question drowns in it's futility, even I have got to laugh at me. No one gets to miss the storm of what will be just holding on for the ride. But the wood is tired, and the wood is old, and we'll make it fine, if the weather holds. But if the weather holds, we'll have missed the point; that's where I need to go. http://www.lyricsdepot.com/indigo_girls/the-wood-song.html Quote

BrotherRog Posted June 7, 2005 Posted June 7, 2005 Actually, IMO, the Wood Song, cited in post 18, correlates very nicely with the following words from the www.tcpc.org homepage: Do you find more grace in the search for meaning than in absolute certainty, in the questions rather than in the answers? == Perhaps the TCPC webmasters could get the permission of the Indigo Girls to play that song of theirs when people open the homepage? I have a contact with them if you'd like to pursue this. Let me know. Quote

des Posted June 8, 2005 Posted June 8, 2005 (edited) Gosh Fred, you sound like one of the writers of Leviticus: Thou shalt not play music on webpages. It is an abomination. Thus sayeth (all that King James edition has had an effect) Fred. :-) (BTW, I agree. Maybe I wouldn't use the word abomination. But it makes me love a certain key on my Mac, which shuteth down the music with one key, instead of gropething around for a slider or something.
