If anyone is interested and missed it, Elaine Pagels (of Gnostic fame) has written a new book titled Revelations: Visions, Prophecy, and Politics in the Book of Revelation. I haven't yet read it, but it is on my list.

In the interview, she treats the book kindly and scholarly. She discusses the literary genre ("wartime literature"), context in which it was written (the destruction of Jerusalem), who might have written it (John of Patmos) as well as the symbolism. She also discusses how the book has been misused by those who see themselves as holy warriors.
