roygbiv2 Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 my name is Jerry. I'm a Southern Baptist Preacher's son who has attended 3 different colleges, all Christian, each one more conservative than the one prior to it. I was licensed to preach once in the Southern Baptist denomination and twice in the Church of the Nazarene. I have served as full-time staff in the Southern Baptist denomination as both a Minister of Music and as a Youth Minister, and have served as a Board member and a Praise Team leader in the Church of the Nazarene. a few years ago, I realized that my calling was not to preaching in the traditional sense and that I had been pursuing that most of my life more because of trying to please my earthly father, rather than being called to it by my Heavenly father. about 10 years ago, after reading a little of Hans Küng's writings, I began to question more and more the Fundamentalist dogmas around which I grew up and to which I myself had nearly always prescribed. I could never resolve those man-made laws with the actual message of the Gospel, especially as studied in the original languages of the scripture. some time last year, I found out about Progressive Christianity and so far, that is the closest definition of what my personal belief system is and is the reason why I've joined the TCPC and this forum. I have worked in the IT industry for the last 15 years and am currently working overnight shift as a Help Center Analyst at a large law firm in Atlanta. I have been Married for nearly 23 years now, and have two sons, ages 21 and 18. I'm a singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist, an actor, and a writer, though not currently active in these fields professionally.
JosephM Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 Hi Jerry, Welcome to the forum. So glad you found this community. I went through a similar ordeal but not because of my earthly father but rather because i followed without question men's precepts as if they were God's. Its good to have you here and looking forward to your sharing and hope that there will be mutual growth for all. Joseph

Mike Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Hi Jerry, Welcome to the board! Hope you find this a meaningful place to share thoughts and experiences. Hans Kung is an important source, though I must admit I could only get about 50 pages in to 'On Being a Christian' before setting it down (indefinitely). Peace, Mike
