Progressive Christian Authors?

Recommended Posts

The only Christian books I am familiar with are written by very conservative authors. These seem to be the only kind sold by nearby stores, from WalMart to Barnes and Nobel, and especially Lifeway.

Since I am not familiar with any moderate, progressive, or liberal Christian author, does anyone have any suggestions that I could look up on Amazon? I'm sort of in the dark about this topic so I'm not sure how to approach it.

Some of my favourites that helped me see Christianity and the bible in a completely different perspective include:

John Shelby Spong

Marcus Borg

Bart Erhman (technically a biblical scholar not a PC author)

Dom Crossan.

My first post:

I'm guessing that Ilia Delio fits into the category of progressive authors but I have not yet read any of her books. Readers of her work say that she is challenging because of her deep knowledge of both science and theology. I would like to ask for advice from you all about a suggested order of her books to read, i.e., from basic to more difficult.

I absolutely loved Marcus Borg's 'Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time - I read it while quite involved in the local Pagan scene, but it moved me enough to spark my re connection to Christianity. I in fact like everything Marcus Borg has written :)

One of my favourite books is by Mitch Albom - Have a Little Faith. - not sure if Mitch Albom self identifies as Progressive Christianity, but upon reading it it relates to many of the dilemmas we share.

My first theology read after college was Gregory Baum's Man Becoming. Still for me, the most influential.

Also try John Hick and John Macquarie both incredible writers and thinkers. Read Hick's 'The Metaphor of God Incarnate.' You could spend the next 10 years on Hick alone.

As mentioned above Borg, Crossan and Ehrman but also try Dale Allison, especially his 'Historical Christ and the Theological Jesus

And Philip Jensen's The Jesus Wars
