Hi Joseph,
I remember you from when I was on this board a year and a half ago.
It is soothing to see one’s mind from a detached position-- the programmed “voice in the head”-- and to identify one’s real self with spirit or presence or the “timeless inner body” as Tolle puts it. If you are able to maintain this state more or less continually– my hat is off to you!
My only quibble is, that the phrase “It doesn’t get any better than this” is misleading – doesn’t represent Tolle accurately. When he says “Your ultimate purpose is awareness” I think he means it’s the necessary groundwork for attaining the goals or pursuing the ideals you have in life. If you have further thoughts on this I’d like to hear…
Hi Rivanna,
That phrase is not meant to represent a person such as Tolle nor is Tolle where I get my words. His book merely impressed me as being a simple approach in different words to that which was discovered in my own journey.
"It doesn't get any better than this" was a phrase a friend of mine used all the time as we rode our motorcycles. For the longest time it was mere foolishness to me because he used it whether we got rained on or not and no matter what the circumstances. As my journey progressed, I realized it was true. Each moment of time that appeared no matter what the content of the situation was indeed the best that the moment had to offer for that moment in time. And even when the conditions or situation changes when we are in the moment it doesn't get any better. It is all good. It makes no difference because the joy of 'being' is always present and available and not dependent on circumstances. When circumstances make it appear it is no longer present we have merely slipped back into identification with the thinking mind and its past images and judgments.
I will not presume to know what Tolle meant by "your ultimate purpose is awareness" but to me it speaks of transcending or rising above the highly conditioned thinking mind by an identification with that awareness which is your true nature and using the thinking mind as a tool in this world rather than allowing the conditioning of the mind to use you by a strong identification with it and its conditioned thoughts and feelings as if that is who you really are. From the vantage point of awareness, one sees more clearly this conditioning to allow choice in selecting the harmony which is in God to flow from us rather than act out a conditioned response from an egoic mind.
In my view one need not have any ideals or goals to pursue in life other than to find ones Self which is no different than awareness/consciousness itself. When one looks from the perspective of awareness, all is complete and action flows of itself so that one will do what needs to be done in the moment to the best of ones ability leaving the results of ones work to the One who is in and through all things. And the universe will take care of presenting you with that which it has for you to do in this concept we call time.
Just some thoughts to consider concerning your question.
Love Joseph
